C. 1 John 2:7-17 DIVINE FELLOWSHIP IS VICTORIOUS
1. 2:7-8 GOD’S WORD IN VICTORY
a. 2:7 THE WORD: THE OLD COMMANDMENT
A-ga-peTOI, ouk en-toLEN kaiNEN [2537] GRApho huMIN,
Beloved, no new commandment write I to you,
all’ en-toLEN pa-laiAN [3820] en EIche-te ap’ arCHES:
but an old commandment which you had from the beginning:
he en-toLE he pa-laiA es-tin ho LOgos hon eKOUsa-te.
the old :commandment is the word which you heard.
b. 2:8 A WALK IN LIGHT AND LOVE: A NEW COMMANDMENT
PAlin, en-toLEN kaiNEN GRApho huMIN,
Again, a new commandment write I to you,
ho es-tin a-leTHES [227] en auTO kai en huMIN;
which thing is true in him and in you;
HOti he skoTIa [4653] paRAge-tai,
because the darkness is passing away,

and the true :light already shines.
2. 2:9-11 GOD’S LOVE IN VICTORY
a. 2:9 A WALK IN DARKNESS: RESULT OF HATRED

Who says he is in the light and hates his :brother,
en te skoTIa esTIN HEos ARti.
is in the darkness even until now.
b. 2:10 A WALK IN LIGHT: RESULT OF BROTHERLY-LOVE
ho a-gaPON ton a-delPHON auTOU en to phoTI MEnei,
Who loves his :brother abides in the light,
kai SKANda-lon [4625] en auTO ouk EStin.
and no stumbling is in him.
c. 2:11 A BLIND WALK: RESULT OF HATRED OF BROTHER
ho de miSON ton a-delPHON auTOU en te skoTIa esTIN,
But who hates his :brother is in the darkness,
kai en te skoTIa pe-ri-paTEI, kai ouk OIden pou huPAgei,
and walks in the darkness, and knows not where he goes,
HOti he skoTIa eTUPHlo-sen [5186] tous oph-thalMOUS auTOU.
because the darkness has blinded his :eyes.
3. 2:12-17 GOD’S KNOWLEDGE IN VICTORY
a. 2:12 PURPOSE OF WRITING: BECAUSE SINS FORGIVEN

I write to you, little children,
HOti aPHEon-tai [863] huMIN hai ha-marTIai diA to Ono-ma [3686] auTOU.
because your :sins are forgiven you for his :name’s sake.
b. 2:13a PURPOSE OF WRITING THIRD CLASS: BECAUSE THEY KNOW CHRIST
GRApho huMIN, paTEres,
I write to you, fathers,
HOti egNOka-te [1097] ton ap’ arCHES.
because you know him who is from the beginning.
c. 2:13b BECAUSE OVERCOMERS: PURPOSE OF WRITING SECOND CLASS
GRApho huMIN, ne-aNISkoi [3495],
I write to you, young men,
HOti ne-niKEka-te [3528] ton po-neRON [4190].
because you have overcome the evil one.
d. 2:13c KNOWLEDGE OF FATHER: PURPOSE FOR WRITING CHILDREN
Egra-psa huMIN, paiDIa [3813],
I wrote to you, little children,
HOti egNOka-te ton paTEra.
because you know the Father.
e. 2:14a FATHERS WRITTEN: BECAUSE THEY KNEW CHRIST
Egra-psa huMIN, paTEres,
I wrote to you, fathers,
HOti egNOka-ton ap’ arCHES.
because you know him who is from the beginning.
f. 2:14b THREE QUALIFICATIONS FOR YOUNG MEN IN CHRIST!
Egra-psa huMIN, ne-aNISkoi, HOti is-chuROI [2478] es-te,
I wrote to you, young men, because you are strong,
kai ho LOgos tou TheOU en huMIN MEnei [3306],
and the word of :God abides in you,
kai ne-niKEka-te [3528] ton po-neRON.
and you have overcome the evil one.
g. 2:15a COMMAND: LOVE NOT THE WORLD!
me a-gaPAte ton KOSmon, meDE ta en to KOSmo.
Love not the world, neither the things in the world.
h. 2:15b MUTUALLY EXCLUSIVE: THE WORLD AND THE FATHER!
eAN tis a-gaPA ton KOSmon,
If any loves the world,
ouk EStin he aGApe tou paTROS en auTO.
the love of the Father is not in him.
i. 2:16 OPPOSITES: THE WORLD AND THE FATHER!
HOti pan to en to KOSmo, he e-pi-thuMIa [1939] tes sarKOS [4561]
Because all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh
kai he e-pi-thuMIa ton oph-thalMON kai he a-la-zoNIa [212] tou BIou [979],
and the lust of the eyes and the vainglory of :life,
ouk EStin ek tou paTROS, alLA ek tou KOSmou esTIN.
is not of the Father, but is of the world.
j. 2:17 THE TRANSITORY WORLD VERSUS THE ETERNAL GOD
kai ho KOSmos paRAge-tai [3855], kai he e-pi-thuMIa auTOU:
And the world passes away, and the lust thereof:
Ho de poiON to THEle-ma [2307] tou TheOU MEnei eis ton aiOna [165].
but who does the will of :God abides unto the age.
NOTE: Many Bible students have noted that God loves to set forth truth in “threes”. The Triunity of the Godhead is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Man is made in the image of God: body, soul and spirit. Moses’ Tabernacle and Solomon’s Temple are Outer Court, Holy Place and Holy of Holies.
Now here in 1 John we find two more out of scores of examples of 3-fold truths. The Holy Spirit through John writes to little children, young men and fathers. God would have us all reach the third stage, yet we all start out in the Kingdom of God as little children. Natural birth, growth and development are a fitting type of this.
Then John takes “young men”, and reveals the potential of a three-fold victory: strong, the word of God abiding, and overcoming the evil one.
