“JOHN 15:17-27”

15:17-27 PERSECUTION: CAUSED BY OUR LOVE TO JESUS
1. 15:17 THE COMMAND TO LOVE: REPEATED

TAUta enTELlo-mai huMIN, HIna a-gaPAte alLElous.

These things I command you, that you may love one another.

15:18 WORLD HATRED: ASSOCIATED WITH JESUS

If the world hates you,

giNOSke-te HOti eME PROton huMON meMIse-ken.

you know that it has hated me before you.

15:19 WORLD HATRED: BECAUSE JESUS CHOSE US

ei ek tou KOSmou Ete, ho KOSmos an to Idi-on ePHIlei [5368]:

If you were of the world, the world would love its :own:

HOti de ek tou KOSmou ouk esTE, all’ eGO e-xe-leXAmen [1586] huMAS

and because you are not of the world, but I chose you

ek tou KOSmou, diA TOUto miSEI huMAS ho KOSmos.

out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

15:20a REMEMBER OUR RELATIONSHIP TO JESUS

mne-moNEUe-te [3421] tou LOgou hou eGO EIpon huMIN,

Remember the word that I said to you,

Ouk EStin DOUlos MEIzon tou kuRIou auTOU.

A bondman is not greater than his :lord.

15:20b THE TREATMENT OF JESUS: WILL BE OUR TREATMENT ALSO

ei eME eDIo-xan [1377], kai huMAS diOxou-sin;

If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you;

Ei ton LOgon mou eTEresan, kai ton huMEte-ron teREsou-sin [5083].

if they kept my :word, they will keep :yours also.

15:21 IGNORANCE OF GOD: MOTIVATION FOR PERSECUTORS

alLA TAUta PANta poiEsou-sin eis huMAS diA to OnoMA mou,

But all these things will they do unto you for my :name’s sake,

HOti ouk OIda-sin ton PEMpsanTA me.

because they know not him that sent me.

15:22 THE GREAT SIN OF REJECTING CHRIST

Ei me ELthon kai eLAlesa auTOIS, ha-marTIan [266] ouk EIcho-san:

If I had not come and spoken to them, they had not had sin:

nun de PROsa-sin [4392] ouk Echou-sin peRI tes ha-marTIas auTON.

but now they have no excuse for their :sin.

15:23 HATRED OF CHRIST IS HATRED OF THE FATHER

ho eME miSON kai ton paTEra mou miSEI.

Who hates me hates my :Father also.

15:24 MIRACLES: PRODUCE CONVICTION OF SIN

ei ta ERga me ePOIe-sa en auTOIS ha ouDEIS ALlos ePOIe-sen,

If I had not done among them the works which none other did,

ha-marTIan ouk EIcho-san: nun de kai he-oRAka-sin

they had not had sin: but now have they both seen

kai me-miSEka-sin kai eME kai ton paTEra mou.

and hated both me and my :Father.

15:25 HATRED OF JESUS: FULFILMENT OF SCRIPTURE

But this is come to pass, that the word be fulfilled

15:26-27 PERSONALITY AND OFFICE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

HOtan ELthe ho paRAkle-tos [3875],

But when the Comforter is come,

hon eGO PEMpso huMIN paRA tou paTROS, to PNEUma tes a-leTHEIas,

whom I will send you from the Father, the Spirit of the truth,

ho paRA tou paTROS ek-poREUe-tai [1607], eKEInos mar-tuREsei [3140] peRI eMOU:

who goes forth from the Father, HE shall witness of me:

kai huMEIS de mar-tuREIte, HOti ap’ arCHES met’ eMOU es-te.

and witness YOU also, because you are with me from the beginning.

NOTE: Jesus gives us an insight concerning the true cause of persecution. In ten sentences from various aspects for our information and understanding – He CLEARLY reveals its cause.

Then suddenly – He moves back to the coming ministry of the Holy Spirit. Through signs and wonders, and through His gifts, the Holy Spirit shall effectively make the true nature of Jesus known, and His relationship to the Father. THIS shall be the main witness of the Holy Spirit on Jesus’ behalf.

And with scarcely a pause, Jesus immediately commissions His 12 disciples to do the same also – because of their relationship with Him from the beginning.

And how does THIS relate to us? By going back to the Great Commission in Matthew 28:18-20, we clearly understand that these words in John 13 – 17 to the 12, are to be passed along to US. Then we too are to carry on an effective witness to Jesus through the Mighty and Effective Enablement of the Holy Spirit -- our Comforter!
