“JOHN 16:1-15”
16:1-15 THE COMFORTER: REASON FOR JESUS’ GOING

but if I go, I will send him unto you.
i. 16:8-11 OFFICES OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Kai elTHON eKEInos, eLEGxei [1651] ton KOSmon peRI ha-marTIas [266],
And HE, coming, will convict the world of sin,
kai peRI di-kai-oSUnes [1343], kai peRI KRIse-os [2920]:
and of righteousness, and of judgment:
peRI ha-marTIas men, HOti ou pisTEUou-sin eis eME;
9 of sin indeed, because they believe not unto me;
peRI di-kai-oSUnes de, HOti pros ton paTEra huPAgo,
10 and of righteousness, because I go unto the Father,
kai ouKEti the-oREI-TE me; peRI de KRIse-os,
and you behold me no more; 11 and of judgment,
HOti ho ARchon tou KOSmou TOUtou KEkri-tai [2919].
because the prince of this :world has been judged.
j. 16:12 JESUS: SHARED ONLY WHAT COULD BE RECEIVED
Eti polLA Echo huMIN LEgein, all’ ou DUnas-the basTAzein [941] ARti.
I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear it now.
k. 16:13 THE COMFORTER: WILL NOT REPRESENT HIMSELF
HOtan de ELthe eKEInos, to PNEUma [4151] tes a-leTHEIas,
But when that one comes, the Spirit of the Truth,
ho-deGEsei [3594] huMAS eis ten aLEthei-an PAsan:
he shall guide you into all the truth:
ou gar laLEsei aph’ he-auTOU;
for he shall not speak from himself;
all’ HOsa aKOUei, laLEsei:
but what things soever he hears, these shall he speak:
kai ta erCHOme-na a-nag-geLEI huMIN.
and he shall declare to you the things to come.
l. 16:14 OFFICE OF THE SPIRIT: TO GLORIFY CHRIST
eKEInos eME doXAsei [1392]: HOti ek tou eMOU LEMpse-tai,
HE shall glorify me: for he shall take of :mine,
kai a-nag-geLEI [312] huMIN.
and shall declare it to you.
m. 16:15 THE REASON FOR THIS
PANta HOsa Echei ho paTER eMA es-tin: diA TOUto EIpon,
All things whatever the Father has are mine: therefore said I,
HOti ek tou eMOU lamBAnei, kai a-nag-geLEI huMIN.
that he takes of :mine, and shall declare it to you.
NOTE: This passage sets forth the truth that the coming of the COMFORTER – the Spirit of Truth – is directly dependant upon the “Finished Work” of Christ. He Himself says so!
“Expediency” nails down the absolute necessity for Calvary and the Ascension. It is FAR BETTER for the Holy Spirit to be IN us, that for Jesus to be WITH us.
Some have sentimentally expressed the wish that they could have lived on earth during the days of Jesus. He explicitly states that we today live in a better day than back then.
Rees Howells testifies to this truth through his experience in Intercession. By all means read his biography by Norman P. Grubb, “Rees Howells, Intercessor.” Many have found this reading a life-transforming experience. One brother has read it each month since 1975.
In verse 13 Jesus shows that the Holy Spirit in us guides us into ALL Truth, and that He does NOT speak FROM Himself. He represents Jesus, just as Jesus represented the Father.
These fifteen verses are so rich, that one can read and reread them – meditate on their truths – pray over them, and trust the Holy Spirit to do within us just what Jesus has proclaimed. And still their riches will be unexhausted!
See the progression from John 13 to this point. The ultimate comes when we reach John 17. Dr. A.W. Tozer preached from this last chapter for many, many weeks in his Chicago church on Sunday mornings, back in the early ‘50’s. Marie and I traveled south in Chicago to hear him on a number of occasions.
To be inwardly aware and intimate with God in His Spirit – is to be rich even as Jesus was as Son of Man in the days of His earthly life.
