NOTE: The Beatitudes are the very heart of the Sermon on the Mount. No man can in himself live the life of the Sermon on the Mount. Rather, it is a picture for man to see the kind of life Christ by His indwelling Spirit will live out through true disciples. The man not surrendered to the control of Christ’s indwelling Spirit will never understand the Sermon on the Mount, nor will he be able to see that life reproduced through him. But one like Rees Howells who was possessed and controlled by the Spirit, will see this life effortlessly lived out through him.
“The Sermon on the Mount” by Oswald Chambers was one of the first three books he wrote and published prior to his Home-going. He makes these principles abundantly clear – and clears the way for believers to become disciples, and realize this life through them. Jesus didn’t ask us to make converts – He asks us to make disciples. The church is full of converts – but disciples controlled by Jesus through His Spirit are difficult to find.
Dr. E. Stanley Jones in his book “The Sermon on the Mount” is also helpful to see God’s perspective and thought on this Scripture portion.
Here is a challenge – Bill Gates of Microsoft fame memorized “The Sermon on the Mount” as a teenager. Would you join with me as I pray daily that God will quicken his spirit by the Holy Spirit – how to move from head knowledge to heart understanding of this portion of Scripture? - J.A.W.
